Main Street in Islip hamlet has added a restaurant and a parade in the last two years, and neither one replaced anything. That is the part worth noticing. In a lot of downtowns, a new arrival means an old sign comes down first. Here, the new keeps opening next to the old, and the old keeps its dinner reservations.
What moved into 553 Main Street
The clearest example sits in a space that used to be Treme. That address is now Bar Clementine, a cocktail-forward bistro built around a signature drink of the same name and a French-inspired menu under executive chef Matt Connors. The people behind it aren't newcomers to the South Shore. Bar Clementine is the second project from the team that runs The LakeHouse in Bay Shore, and the pedigree shows in the room: a Parisian-bistro feel, a full bar, sidewalk seating on Main Street itself.
That detail matters more than it looks. A hospitality group doesn't open its second location in a town it hasn't studied. The LakeHouse team already knows what a South Shore dinner crowd wants on a Friday night. Choosing Islip to test it a second time is a read on the street, not a guess.
The anchors Bar Clementine moved in next to
Walk half a block in either direction and the street tells a longer story. Tellers, An American Chophouse sits at 605 Main Street with a dress code that still asks for business casual and no baseball caps, the kind of policy a restaurant only keeps if it has regulars who expect it. Da Noi built its menu on recipes carried from Manhattan into a family dining room in the heart of Islip, the sort of Italian spot where the servers know your order before you sit down. J&R's Islip Steak House runs a Tuesday veterans deal and a Sunday-through-Thursday kids-eat-free policy, the practical end of the same street that also has a bar built around a single signature cocktail.
None of these places are relics. They are the reason Bar Clementine had an audience waiting.
The precedent for that kind of import already exists a few doors down. Bayberry opened at 501 Main Street in June 2023 as a Lessing's Hospitality Group concept, a 5,000 square foot American bistro with a 40 seat bar and private event space built for more than a hundred guests. Lessing's runs restaurants across Long Island's waterfront towns. Choosing Islip for this one, and having it hold three years later, is the same signal Bar Clementine sends now: outside hospitality money keeps landing on this particular Main Street and keeps staying.
The same logic shows up on the calendar
Restaurants are the easiest layer to see because you can walk past the signage. The civic calendar works the same way, and it is easier to miss because it only shows up a few weekends a year.
The newest addition is the Islip Irish Day Parade, which stepped off for the first time on September 21, 2025. It wasn't a generic heritage event. The parade honored Jesse Gerhard, an Islip Fire Department and FDNY firefighter who died in the line of duty in 2022, and named his family as its First Grand Family. The route ran from Islip Town Hall West east along Main Street, and Harp & Hound, the Irish pub already anchoring that stretch, hosted the after-party with food, pints, and live music, according to reporting from Greater Long Island. Organizers said at the time they hoped it would become an annual tradition. This year answers that. The second Islip Irish Day Parade is confirmed for Sunday, September 20, 2026, on the same Main Street route.
That is a new tradition landing directly on top of two older ones, not competing with them for a weekend.
A five-week run, if you know to look
Here is the part a resident feels more than reads about on a flyer. Stack the confirmed 2026 dates together and Main Street runs a continuous five-week civic season from late September into mid-October:
- September 20 – The second annual Islip Irish Day Parade, stepping off at Islip Town Hall West and running east on Main Street, with Harp & Hound hosting the after-party.
- September 27 – The Historical Society of Islip Hamlet's Oakwood Cemetery Tour, now in its fifth year.
- October 3 and 4 – Fun run and 5K events at Heckscher State Park, rain or shine.
- October 19 – The Islip Fire Department Hook & Ladder Company #1's Main Street Fall Festival street fair, with a new grand prize this year and the usual Chinese auction, according to the event listing.
Three of those four have existed for years on their own. The parade is the piece that turned scattered dates into a season. Before 2025, the Oakwood tour and the Fall Festival sat on the calendar as two unconnected weekends a resident might or might not catch. Add a parade that starts at Town Hall, runs the length of Main Street, and ends at the same Irish pub that anchors the restaurant strip, and the four dates now read as one continuous stretch of the year when Main Street is the destination rather than a drive-through.
What it adds up to
The dining scene and the civic calendar are telling the same story from two different angles. Bar Clementine didn't replace Treme's audience, it borrowed a proven playbook from Bay Shore and set it down next to a chophouse, an Italian family restaurant, and a steakhouse that have already earned their regulars. The Irish Day Parade didn't replace the cemetery tour or the fall festival, it filled the gap between them and gave the whole run a name. Main Street Islip in 2026 isn't a neighborhood mid-reinvention. It's one that keeps adding a layer without disturbing the ones underneath, which is a much harder thing for a small downtown to pull off than it sounds.
